Each system provides slightly differently depending on the driver’s needs and preferences. Part-time 4x4, like the Wrangler’s Command-Trac, defaults to two-wheel drive while driving on normal road conditions. However, drivers can shift into four-wheel-drive when off-roading to offer better traction. Part-time 4x4 gives you the option to choose 4-High and 4-Low drive modes, depending on vehicle speed. Once you turn on four-lock, torque is split between both axles at 50/50. Full-time 4x4, like the Grand Cherokee’s Quadra-Trac II system, drives all four wheels simultaneously at all times. When a loss of traction is detected, the system will automatically send up to 100% of torque to either axle to counteract the slip. Lastly, on-demand 4x4, like the Compass’s Active Drive system, is somewhat of a combination of both part-time and full-time. It’s like part-time because it operates in two-wheel drive when on smooth, dry roads. However, like full-time 4x4, it will sense a loss of traction and engage all four wheels to regain and maintain traction without any driver input.

Before starting your off-roading endeavor, the most important thing to do is to ensure that the vehicle is ready. This begins with giving your Jeep a thorough inspection. When you check it over, ensure that the tires have adequate tread depth and that the tires are inflated properly. It’s also good to ensure that the battery is fastened tightly and in good condition. Next, check to ensure your fluids are topped off, including your engine oil. Many experienced off-roaders will recommend filling up your tank before hitting the trails and also bringing a few extra gallons of gas, just in case. Lastly, pop the hood and ensure that all the hoses, lines, and belts are in good shape and free from cracks or leaks. Additionally, each driver should have a spotter if driving over challenging terrain. The spotter will help guide the driver on how they should steer and control their speed. Without a spotter, you could get tripped up by an obstacle you couldn’t see. Additionally, all off-roaders should have a winch and know how to use it. Lastly, create an emergency kit to bring along.
