Electric Vehicle Chargers Explained

Electric vehicles are on the rise, gaining popularity by the day. However, there are some questions folks have regarding EVs. Both fully-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids require being plugged into an external power source to recharge the battery. This can be done with one of three different charging cords, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Of course, the charging speed depends on the battery’s size and current state of charge. However, it also depends on what level charger is being used, as they provide different voltage ratings while all using the same SAE J1772 connector. As we get more EVs here at Temecula Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want to help firm up your understanding of the different EV chargers. Please continue reading below to learn more!

Level 1 EV Charger

The standard method of charging for all EVs is Level 1. These are the cords that come with the purchase of any new battery electric vehicle (BEV) or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). A Level 1 charger is plugged into a standard 120-volt household outlet. If you own a BEV, it can take up to 24 hours to get a full charge with a Level 1 charger. However, PHEVs can get a full charge between six and twelve hours. As we mentioned above, these charge times depend on the battery’s size and state of charge. Many BEV or PHEV owners opt to leave their vehicles plugged in overnight to wake up to a good charge.

Level 2 EV Charger

Up next is the Level 2 charging cord. EV owners can purchase a Level 2 charging cord to reduce their total charge time. While Level 1 chargers plug into a traditional household outlet, a Level 2 charger is professionally installed and hardwired into your home’s electrical system. The Level 2 charging stations provide BEVs with a full charge in four to nine hours, while PHEV owners can get a full charge in one and a half to four hours. BEV owners tend to invest in a Level 2 charger to ensure a full charge every night.

Level 3 EV Charger

A Level 3 charger, also known as a DC Fast Charger, can only be found at certain public charging stations and are not yet available for purchase. Also, only BEVs can use a Level 3 charger as of now, and not PHEVs. Using a DC Fast Charger, a BEV can reach 80% of charge in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. As with most American states, more Level 3 chargers are being installed here in California in more locations making sure BEV drivers are never far from a quick charge.
