Learn More from Temecula CDJR!

For decades, Jeep vehicles have been a top choice for off-roaders, whether they're just starting out or have spent years on the trails. While having a highly capable vehicle like a Jeep is important, it is equally important to know how to keep yourself, your vehicle, and others around you safe. Here at Temecula Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want to help you get the most out of your Jeep. So please keep reading below to learn a few tips to keep you safe during your off-road journey!

Take It Slow

While off-roading, you must remain in complete control of the vehicle to avoid an accident, which requires a level of precision and finesse. Many off-roaders drive by the phrase "as slow as possible, as fast as necessary." While it's important to keep your speed low, you, of course, need some speed to carry you over the terrain. It's important to get a feel for the perfect speed balance. For example, the average speed of drivers on the Rubicon Trail is roughly three miles per hour, sometimes as slow as one MPH and almost never faster than five MPH.

Never Go Alone

One of the most important tips you'll hear from an off-roader is to never go alone. It is essential to hit the trails with at least one other vehicle. Traveling with another vehicle is important because if one vehicle ends up getting stuck or damaged, the other vehicle can be used to recover the vehicle and get the driver to safety. As an added layer of safety, you should also tell someone where you're going and roughly what time you anticipate being back. This way, if something goes awry and you can't reach out for help, someone else will know when to contact rescue services and the area they should go in.

Prepare for the Worst

While we all want to have a fun time on the trails, it is important to prepare for a rough time to be ready for the unexpected. It's not uncommon for a seemingly harmless drive on the beach to turn into something unexpected. Therefore, you should expect the unexpected and pack an emergency kit of things you may need. Of course, it is essential to have to straps and hooks or a winch. You should also bring a set of tools, a tire repair kit, extra gas, extra food and water, a first aid kit, and whatever you may need to spend the night.

What to do if You Come Across Water

Many off-road trails will bring you to water crossings, whether in the form of a stream, puddles, or mud. Some of these water crossings can be deceiving and hide a deep hole in the trail. It's best practice to scope out a puddle before crossing it if you are unsure of its depth. Chances are, if you can't walk through a puddle, you probably shouldn't drive through it. When you come across a section of water on the trail that you're unsure of, put your Jeep in park, turn on the emergency brake, and get out and check it out by either walking it or sticking a long stick into it to test the depth. If you determine it is too deep for your Jeep's tires, find a different way around it.

Maintain Your Vehicle

Your Jeep's ability to handle off-roading trails depends on how well it is maintained and the conditions it's in. Before you hit the trails, you should give your Jeep a thorough look-over. First, check the battery and ensure that it is securely fastened in place. While you're under the hood, you should also check the fluid levels, including the power-steering fluid, brake fluid, oil, and coolant. Also, ensure that all of the hoses and lines underneath the hood are in good condition and free from cracks or leaks. Next, check to ensure that all stock lights and any auxiliary lights are fully operational. Then, check your tires to ensure that they have adequate tread depth and are properly inflated. If you'd prefer a professional to take a look at your vehicle or require any services to make sure your Jeep is ready for the trails, the service center here at Temecula Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is here to help!
