The Jeepster Beach Concept at the 2021 Moab Easter Safari

This year, at the 2021 Easter Jeep Safari, held in Moab, Utah, Jeep showed off several unique concept vehicles to enthusiasts and the press. One vehicle that drew a considerable amount of attention was the Jeepster Beach, a throwback to the second-generation Jeepster Commando. Here's the story from the folks at DCH Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Temecula, CA.

What is the Easter Jeep Safari?

The Easter Jeep Safari, hosted by Moab’s Red Rock 4-Wheelers club, is an annual nine-day event in late March. The Jeep Safari was started in 1967 by the Moab Chamber of Commerce as just a one-day trail ride. Over the years, as participation grew, the Safari expanded until it finally reached the current large-scale, nine-day event.  Throughout the Safari, 4x4 vendors and manufacturers, such as Jeep Brand and Jeep Performance Parts (JPP), showcase new products and concept vehicles.

What is a Jeepster Commando?

The Jeepster Commando is a Jeep built by the Kaiser company from 1966-1973. Coming in four different models, the pickup truck, wagon, roadster, and convertible, it was designed to compete with the International Scout and Ford Bronco. The Jeep Commando was the first compact four-wheel-drive vehicle with an automatic transmission and, unlike the Jeep CJs of its day, boasted modern details, such as doors, roll-up side glass, and a heater.

What's special about the 2021 Jeepster Beach?

The Jeepster Beach concept started as a 1968 Jeepster Commando and -ready for this- blended it with a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.
First, the body was modified to blends the original chrome trim with an updated, brightly colored two-tone paint scheme of Hazy IPA and Zinc Oxide. The designers of this “resto-mod” project at Jeep strived to maintain the outward appearance of a vintage Jeepster.

Inside the Jeepster Beach’s custom interior, low-back bucket seats are trimmed in red leather. The rear seat is replaced with a chrome, four-point safety cage and custom door panels werefashioned.

Under the hood, Jeepster Beach has a high-tech 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine modified to produce 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The direct-injection engine uses a twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger mounted directly to the cylinder head, along with a dedicated cooling circuit for the turbocharger. An eight-speed automatic transmission mated to a 4:1 transfer case delivers power to 35-inch tires.

What is the Jeep Performance Parts group?

Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) was created in 2012 to offer off-road enthusiasts high-end, high-quality aftermarket accessories and performance parts. The portfolio of factory-backed, quality-tested parts includes axles, lift kits, bumpers, winches, skid plates, suspension components, and more. The products are created in close conjunction with the Jeep brand and factory-exclusive data is used to seamlessly integrate performance parts and accessories in order to deliver proper fit, finish, and quality.
