Following four generations of the Jeep Cherokee and nearly 7 million in global sales, the Jeep brand continues to excel with the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. This newest Cherokee is designed and engineered to deliver legendary 4x4 capability in a package that offers outstanding power and towing capability.

What’s different about the new L models?

Available in four different Grand Cherokee trim configurations, Laredo, Limited, Overland, and Summit, the new L models are built on an all-new vehicle chassis. The new design offers three available 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II), Quadra-Lift air suspension, and Selec-Terrain traction system. Power comes from two fuel-efficient and refined engines: the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and the 5.7-liter V-8.

What are the details of the 3.6-liter V-6 engine?

The standard all-aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is rated at 290 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque. Lauded for its cutting-edge design, the 60-degree angle between the Pentastar V-6’s cylinder banks make it exceptionally smooth running. On top of the engine, dual overhead camshafts include two-step variable valve lift and variable-valve timing (VVT) for a balance between power and efficiency.

Fuel-saving engine stop-start (ESS) technology is standard on the Pentastar V-6. The ESS system has been refined for the Grand Cherokee L. Changes include a pressure reserve element in the eight-speed transmission, which provides dedicated transmission fluid to the shift elements at engine restart for immediate power.

Engineers have designed the Pentastar engine so that nearly 90 percent of the engine’s peak torque is available from 1,800 to 6,400 rpm. This results in a functional towing capacity of up to 6,200 pounds and a class-leading driving range of nearly 500 miles.

What are the details of the 5.7-liter V-8 engine?

Buyers who need a bit more power can opt for the 5.7-liter V-8, rated at 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft. of torque. With a foundation of a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder heads, the 5.7-liter V-8 delivers performance and efficiency with VVT and Fuel Saver Technology.

Fuel Saver Technology uses a cylinder shut-off system to deactivates four cylinders during light acceleration or cruising situations on the highway. The system is active in an expanded region with respect to the previous generations. It provides full V-8 power for acceleration and heavy loads. Depending on the driving scenario, the system can increase fuel economy from 5 to 20 percent.

The Grand Cherokee L with the 5.7-liter V-8 has a class-leading towing capacity of up to 7,200 pounds.

What transmissions are available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee L?

Both the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter V-8 mate to the durable TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. This transmission offers widespread of gear ratios to help keep the engine rpm in the ideal range – whether it's cruising on the highway or going off-road. On-the-fly shift-map changing enables the transmission to quickly adjust its shift strategy to match the driver’s demands based on parameters such as engine torque changes, hill detection, ambient temperature, and acceleration.
