Highway 79 Road Trip
A road trip along Highway 79 is an excellent way to explore San Diego's charming mountain communities, complete with animal encounters, waterfalls, epic views, and gold! We recommend visiting Lions, Tigers & Bears for a roaring good time. This non-profit rescue facility is dedicated to providing a safe haven for abandoned and unwanted animals, including exotic big cats and wild bears.
Historic Highway 80
This desert-to-ocean scenic road trip traverses the 150 miles of Historic Highway 80. You will wind through the picturesque, chaparral-covered rolling hills of San Diego's East County, coming to an end on the Pacific peninsula of Point Loma. Along this nostalgic route are several charming towns and roadside wonders worth exploring. Be sure you make time for Desert View Tower, located on the easternmost portion of the highway. The 70-foot-high Desert View Tower, built in 1922 as a tribute to early pioneers, welcomes travelers starting their Highway 80 road trip.
Historic County Route S2
This delightful desert road trip was formerly the Great Overland Stage Route of 1849. County Route S2 stretches more than 65 miles from the small desert town of Ocotillo to the Historic Highway 79 junction near Warner Springs in San Diego's rural East County. The dramatic landscape unfolds with famous hot springs, campgrounds, parks, and photo-worthy roadside attractions to discover. Also, take in the vast expanse and natural beauty of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California's largest state park, encompassing 640,000 acres.
