Towing with Ram Trucks

If you are headed to the lake this summer and plan on taking a boat with you, you should be sure that you have a vehicle that will tow it without trouble. After all, there’s no quicker way to ruin a vacation than to have your tow vehicle break down when you’ve got the whole family all packed in, swim suits on, and ready to “get there.”

Thankfully, there’s an iron-clad remedy to this sort of risk and it involves having the best towing vehicle there is: a Ram truck. For decades, RAM trucks have been known for hauling heavy equipment and recreational vehicles with total ease and providing a safe, luxurious ride while doing so. Let’s take a quick look at the Ram lineup for 2021 and see what sort of towing loads they can handle.

What is the 2021 RAM 1500 capacity?

The RAM 1500 is available with three different engines and all come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. RWD is standard, and 4WD is available.

As for engines, the 1500's standard is a 3.6-liter V-6 supplemented by Ram's eTorque 48-volt mild-hybrid system. It generates 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Next up is an available 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 at 260 hp and 480 lb-ft. And, for those that need serious power, the legendary supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8 lives under the hood of the TRX model. This engine produces 702 hp and 650 lb-ft.

Depending on the model and engine, the RAM 1500 can tow up to an impressive 12,750 lbs with a payload capacity of 2,300 lbs. In addition to performance and power, the RAM 1500 offers the latest towing technology features, like Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring, Trailer Light Check and Trailer-Tow Power-Folding Mirrors with 360° surround view camera.

How much can the 2021 RAM 2500 tow?

The rugged RAM 2500 is the Ram 1500s big brother and this truck really makes the grade with the heavy-weight towing crowd. With the standard 6.4L HEMI V8 engine, the Ram 2500 can tug along 17,350 lbs, and with the available 6.7L Cummins® Turbo Diesel engine, it will pull 19,680 lbs.

The 2500 is offered with a wealth of cab and bed options.  It can be ordered with a single-row regular cab, two-row crew cab, or a bigger two-row mega cab. Also, regular cab models can be ordered with an 8-foot bed, the crew cab trucks are available with the 8-footer or a 6-foot-4-inch bed, and the 2500 mega cab is exclusively offered with the shorter box.

To make loading/unloading more convenient, the RAM 2500 also offers rear air suspension with bed lowering mode.

What is the 2021 RAM 3500 towing capacity?

The most powerful super duty truck in the RAM family, the RAM 3500 is available with one of two engine choices. The gas engine is a 6.4-liter V-8 developing 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, and is coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Either engine can be ordered with standard RWD or available 4WD.

Opting for the diesel puts a 6.7-liter Cummins turbocharged I-6 under the hood and the eight-speed automatic gets substituted for a beefed up six-speed unit. The standard Cummins generates 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque but if you need more, a high-output version nets out 400 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

And, what can it tow? With the Cummins diesel in place, the Ram 3500 can tow an astounding 37,100 pounds with maximum payload capacity weighing in at 7,680 pounds.
